Keeping Your Home Safe: Take the Free Home Security Survey Offered by Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County, Inc. – By Vivian Havlin

Your home is your sanctuary—and keeping it secure is more important than ever. In an effort to support safer neighborhoods and more informed homeowners, Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County is committed to helping residents identify vulnerabilities and strengthen their home protection plans.

What is the Home Security Survey?

The Citizens’ Crime Watch Home Security Survey is a free, professional assessment provided by our staff or affiliated public safety departments. The goal is to educate residents about simple, effective steps they can take to improve security—from reinforcing locks to improving outdoor lighting.

Officers or trained community liaisons will visit your property (by appointment) to evaluate:

  • Door and window security
  • Lighting and visibility around the home
  • Garage and fence safety
  • Alarm systems and surveillance options
  • Landscaping and sightline risks
  • Emergency contact plans

At the end of the survey, homeowners receive a personalized checklist and safety suggestions tailored to their property.

Why It Matters

Home burglaries and property crimes are often crimes of opportunity. Many intrusions happen not because a home was specifically targeted, but because it appeared easier to access than others nearby.

By participating in the survey, you can:

  • Deter potential intruders
  • Reduce your risk of loss or damage
  • Improve your family’s sense of safety
  • Possibly qualify for insurance discounts

Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to connect with local safety resources and stay proactive.

Who Can Participate?

The Home Security Survey is available to:

  • Miami-Dade County homeowners and renters
  • Condo and apartment residents (with management approval)
  • Neighborhood and HOA groups

There’s no cost, and all evaluations are confidential.
